Notarization Instructions
Items
You should receive (or download/print):
- Sufficient copies of the identity assertion form with your name, E-mail address, NIC and Thawte ID entered on each
- A copy of the final "Matrix of Trust" (the organiser will provide this)
- This page with instructions
You should bring with you:
- The original of your (primary) ID document
- Sufficient copies of it, according to the "Matrix of Trust"
- If necessary, another (secondary) ID document if your Thawte NIC is based on something different than your current ID document
- Sufficient copies of the secondary ID, if relevant
1. Get notarised
If you are not yet a WoT-notary this is the most important part of the meeting. If you are already a notary, do the others the favour and assert their identities in order to raise their level.
- Sign your forms and attach a copy of your ID documents
- Look up your name in the column header above the Matrix, check for non-zero cells in the column and look up the left-hand row header to find which notaries are assigned to you.
- Visit these notaries, hand them the form with the ID copies and let them check your original ID documentation.
- Make a checkmark on the Matrix for each successful notarization process. Check if you have collected at least 100 points. Contact the meeting organiser if this is not the case.
This way you will become a WoT-notary and therefore should proceed with step 2, even if you are a newcomer right now.
2. Notarise others
If you are an experienced notary do others the favour and assert their identity; if you are a newcomer take the chance to raise your level by notarising others. Again, have a look at the Matrix:
- Look up your name in the left-hand row header of the Matrix, check for non-zero cells in the row and look up the column header to find which people want you to assert their identities.
- Get the signed notarisation form and copies of their ID - check their name, birth date and picture against the original document.
- Keep these papers together and store them in a safe place for step 3
You're done for the moment - enjoy the rest of the meeting, and have nice talks.
3. Homework
- Log in to your Thawte account
- If you aren't yet a notary, check if you have been turned into a notary. If this does not happen within a few days, contact the meeting organiser and tell him/her which people signed you (you can check this in your account), which people should have signed you but failed to and how many points you have collected so far.
- Start asserting identities accessing "Make an assertion". If you haven't yet reached the maximum of 35 points to assign, watch how your level raises after a certain number of notarisations.
- If you were "untrusted" before the show, your certificate did not contain your name. The usual way is to request a new certificate, distribute it to your partners (e. g. the attendants of the meeting) and optionally revoke the old one.
- Contact the meeting organiser to report the status you had before and after the meeting (e.g. untrusted 10-points -> notary 15 points or Notary 15 points -> notary 20 points). A "success story" should be sent to Penny Davidson at Thawte.
4. What's next?
- Check your listing in the WoT-directory. By default, you will be listed with a quite anonymous statement. You may customize this.
- As a notary, you will be contacted by other people. You may meet them individually or organise your own notarisation show. You may ask other notaries to support you.
- You may notarise your organisation (company, school, ...)
- Other Ideas?
May the Thawte be with you.
