Anne Rice, Servant of the Bones

Synopsis

Azriel is a magnificent spirit created through a misguided and ill-conceived series of acts by cruel high priests of ancient Babylon. The tale follows his history as he recounts it to an old historian in a remote cabin in the mountains. Intended to be an evil harbinger commanded by the whim of powerful sorcerors, Azriel decides his destiny lies in another direction...

My Thoughts

Servant of the Bones follows a trend that can be seen through most of Anne Rice's writings. Taking us back into ancient history, she shows her research to be as thorough as usual - ancient Babylon is brought to life through the eyes of her latest strange hero: the colours, the sights and even the sounds - you feel like you could actually be there.

As Azriel takes us through his life (or what he can remember of it, since the process of 'demonification' messed up his memory), we hear of his 'Masters' living in places as varied as ancient Greece, Paris, and finally New York. Little do any of them know what they've done in summoning the temperamental Azriel!

Once again, Anne Rice has written a stunning book that I enjoyed very much.
